About Spravato

Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and for depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder with acute suicidal ideation. At CPS, Spravato is administered in-office under medical supervision through a REMS-certified program (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy — a required FDA safety program). This page is for patients who have tried multiple antidepressants without sufficient relief.

Unlike IV ketamine, Spravato is specifically FDA-approved for depression and is often covered by commercial insurance and Medicare. It works rapidly through the brain's glutamate system, targeting depression through a pathway that conventional SSRIs and SNRIs don't reach.

Our Spravato program integrates with CPS counseling, medication management, and when clinically appropriate our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP — a structured treatment program involving several hours of therapy per week) for comprehensive care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for Spravato?
Spravato is FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression — typically defined as having tried at least two different oral antidepressants without adequate response. A psychiatric evaluation will confirm eligibility.
How is Spravato different from IV ketamine?
Spravato is FDA-approved esketamine nasal spray, administered in REMS-certified clinics and usually covered by insurance. IV ketamine is administered intravenously, is typically self-pay, and is used off-label.
Will my insurance cover Spravato?
Most commercial insurance plans and Medicare cover Spravato as an FDA-approved treatment. Our team verifies benefits and handles prior authorization before you start.
Can I drive home after a Spravato session?
No. Due to transient sedation and dissociative effects, you must arrange a driver or rideshare for the day of each dosing session. You cannot drive until the next day after a full night's sleep.
