About IOP

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured, group-based treatment program delivering 9 or more clinical hours per week across three to five days. At CPS, our IOP is designed for adults and older adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, mood disorders, and co-occurring conditions. This page is for patients whose symptoms are not responding to weekly therapy alone, and for families or providers looking for a step-down from inpatient care.

IOP at CPS combines group therapy, individual sessions, skills training (DBT and CBT-based), psychoeducation, and coordinated medication management. We use measurement-based care — patients complete validated rating scales at intake and throughout treatment — so progress is tracked objectively.

Many patients use IOP as a bridge: stepping down from inpatient hospitalization, or stepping up from weekly therapy that isn't enough. Others use IOP alongside Spravato, ketamine, or medication adjustments to stabilize more quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does IOP last?
Most patients complete the program in 6–12 weeks, depending on progress. The program is time-limited by design — the goal is to stabilize and transition back to weekly therapy.
Is IOP covered by insurance?
Yes — IOP is a recognized level of care and is covered by most commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid when medically necessary. Our team verifies benefits before enrollment.
How is IOP different from PHP or inpatient treatment?
Partial Hospitalization (PHP) runs 20+ hours per week; inpatient requires a 24-hour hospital stay. IOP is 9+ hours per week, allowing you to live at home and keep working or attending school.
Do I need a referral to join IOP?
No referral is required, but we do a clinical intake to confirm IOP is the appropriate level of care for you. Call (801) 483-1600 to schedule the intake.

Treatment-Resistant Depression

If two or more antidepressants haven't worked, you are not broken — you may simply need a different category of treatment. Ketamine and Spravato often deliver relief in days, not months.
